PORTLAND, Maine – Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner, Mary Mayhew, will join The Maine Heritage Policy Center to discuss the challenges of preserving Medicaid for the truly needy, in spite of the state’s growing spending on social services. She will highlight the major reforms and improvements that have been made, along with the administration’s vision for Medicaid in the days ahead. Finally, she will address the ongoing calls for Medicaid expansion and explain why reform, and not expansion, is the order of the day.

Before being appointed Commissioner by Governor Paul LePage, Mayhew served for a brief time as the Senior Health Policy Advisor to the governor. Prior to joining state government, Mayhew served as Vice President of the Maine Hospital Association for eleven years. Commissioner Mayhew has earned a reputation for her direct, no-nonsense approach and her tireless efforts on behalf of those needy individuals her department was designed to protect.
