Parents everywhere have been caught off-guard by the widespread public closures of schools and nonessential businesses due to state and local responses to stemming the spread of the coronavirus. Many who have never attempted homeschooling are now forced to dive in to continue their child’s education.

Meet the Panel

Shirley Minster, MS Ed.

Shirley Minster is a strong supporter of homeschooling and has been working with homeschoolers since 1979, both as a teacher and as a consultant.

She co-founded Royal Academy, a private K-12 school, and Home Education & Family Services. These organizations help homeschooling families with curriculum, teaching, and consulting.

For over 40 years she has contributed articles to Home Educator’s Family Times, The Good News Connection, and various other nationally known homeschool publications. She is a national and international speaker on educational and developmental topics.

She continues to teach individual students over the internet and consult with parents about high school issues, giftedness, and special needs.

Jane Keffer

Jane Keffer has been involved in many aspects of the modern homeschooling movement since the mid-1980s when she began homeschooling her own two children. For over three decades she has worked as a home education consultant and since 1994, as a staff member of Royal Academy Home Education & Family Services, in Gray, Maine.

She founded Home Educator’s Family Times, a homeschool publication, and the Homeschool Support Network, providing on-going support, information and encouragement to home-educating families.

Trisha White

Trisha White has been involved with homeschooling for over two decades. She owns and operates Guilford Christian Academy here in Maine with her husband Jim. Their three children have all graduated from GCA and the grandchildren are enrolled. 

Guilford Christian Academy (GCA) is a Recognized for Attendance Purposes Private School (RAPPS) that serves over 300 students each year. GCA has offered counseling and guidance for thousands of children and families who have successfully homeschooled over the last 20 years.

Heidi Sampson

Heidi Sampson is serving her second term in the Maine House of Representatives where she represents House District 21: Alfred, Newfield and parts of Limerick, Parsonsfield and Shapleigh. 

Heidi is a veteran home educator who is also the first home educator to be appointed to the State Board of Education. She serves on the Maine Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee and is a frequent speaker around the state on various topics in education.

She received the 2018 Freedom and Opportunity Award from The Maine Heritage Policy Center, now Maine Policy Institute.
