Maine Policy Pours: Emergency Executive Power
January 28, 2021 @ 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Join Maine Policy friends and staff for a Maine Policy Pours virtual happy hour, Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 4:30 p.m. to discuss a brand new research publication on emergency executive power in all 50 states.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, governors across the country wielded emergency power in unprecedented ways in 2020.
How does Maine’s process for declaring and renewing a state of emergency, in addition to the powers granted to the governor under this declaration, compare to other states? What can Maine do to protect against future abuses of emergency power?
Nick Murray, policy analyst and author of the report, will describe the research, methodology, and outline an ideal emergency powers law that adequately balances the power of the governor with the legislature.
Maine Policy staff will also respond to questions about the report’s findings and its policy recommendations.
