About the Position

Maine Policy Institute is seeking an energetic, organized, and detail-oriented full-time policy analyst to conduct the organization’s research, legislative testimony, blog posts and public policy outreach. This position will report directly to the director of legislative affairs and work closely with the director of civic engagement to track and testify on legislation and communicate MPI’s policy solutions to the public.

The policy analyst advances MPI’s mission by conducting timely and in-depth research into policy solutions to Maine’s most pressing challenges. This highly-skilled individual is a self starter and constantly seeks learning opportunities.

MPI is the strongest voice in Augusta for taxpayers and believes in an open, transparent, and accountable state government. MPI works to ensure hardworking Mainers keep the fruits of their labor and defends their rights and liberties from government overreach.

Governed by an independent Board of Directors, Maine Policy is a 501(c)(3), tax exempt organization that relies on the generous support of individuals, corporations, and foundations, and does not accept government funds or perform contract work. With six full-time staff members and hundreds of individual supporters, Maine Policy conducts detailed and timely research and develops public policy solutions that improve the lives of Maine citizens. MPI educates the public, engages legislators, and employs the media to shift public opinion and establish enduring change in our state.

Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct and oversee research and analysis of public policy issues facing Maine to educate policymakers and the public about principled reforms, trends in state policymaking, and current data.
  2. Draft reports, blog postsa, issue briefs, and memos on a range of policy topics.
  3. Prepare and deliver testimony to legislative committees at the state and local level, as well as executive branch boards and commissions.
  4. Draft and submit bill language to legislators, government officials, and legislative staff upon request.
  5. Maintain knowledge of current state issues pertaining to MPI’s mission.
  6. Communicate with the media, partners and allies in Maine and around the country to identify potential research and reform opportunities.
  7. Assist grassroots and legislative coordination to advance policy priorities.
  8. Manage interns and contractors to enhance and expand the impact of MPI.

Qualifications:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in government, public policy, political science, economics or a related field.
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  3. Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Excel, statistics software, and research methods.
