Maine Policy Institute Statement on Governor Janet Mills’
Supplemental Budget Proposal

Maine Policy Institute CEO Matthew Gagnon issued this statement today following the release of Gov. Janet Mills’ supplemental budget proposal:

“The hardworking people of Maine deserve to have the projected surplus returned to them in its entirety–not in the form of one-time checks, but in reduced tax rates, particularly taxes related to consumption. This would do far more for the average Maine family through the current budget cycle than a one-time, $500 check.

“Mainers will continue to pay the same tax rates on the cost of inflated goods and services until inflation subsides, which there is no sign of stopping. If the governor and lawmakers want to help battle inflation–the issue top of mind for nearly every Mainer–they will end the gimmicks and pursue a supplemental budget that actually helps them weather the current storm.”
