Unfortunately, there is a dearth of good comparative energy information by state. I recently found the website of the Institute for Energy Research that not only ranks the 50 states based on their average electricity rate but also gives information on the mix of energy sources and reasons for the cost of energy. Maine’s electricity affordability is the 40th worst in the country at 12.89 cents per kilowatt hour. Additionally, Maine has plenty of company as all New England states rank extremely poorly. Among the culprits are the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and renewable energy mandates. Check it out, there is a lot of good information.
