(PORTLAND) — Today, The Maine Heritage Policy Center (MHPC) joined more than 100 organizations across the United States and around the world by holding an event honoring the life and work of Dr. Milton Friedman, a Nobel Laureate who was widely recognized as one of the most influential economists of the last century and the father of the modern educational choice movement.

The 2016 Friedman Legacy Day Luncheon, held in conjuncture with the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, featured a presentation by the Honorable Garrett Mason, Maine Senate District 22, on the past, present and future of educational choice in Maine.

MHPC also announced and recognized the winners of the 2016 Milton Friedman Essay Contest, a contest for high school and college students detailing why educational choice is so important, and how it would help students in Maine.

The winners are as follows:

  • 1st Place: Joshua Durgin of Cornish, Undergraduate
  • 2nd Place: Lilly Furrow of Bangor, 10th Grade
  • 3rd Place: Jacob Posik of Turner, Undergraduate

“It was encouraging to receive submissions from students from all around the state on this important issue for our first-ever writing contest. Going into this, we had no idea what to expect, but the caliber of submissions far exceeded our expectations. We would like to thank all of the students who submitted an essay for consideration,” said Matthew Gagnon, CEO of MHPC.

The top three essays will be published next week on The Maine Wire, The Maine Heritage Policy Center’s online news publication dedicated to your right to know.
