Maine Policy Statement on Maine Wire Report of
Noncitizen Voting in Maine Elections
Maine Policy calls on Gov. Mills to investigate this matter and champion a legislative solution in the next Legislature
PORTLAND, Maine – Maine Policy Institute CEO Matthew Gagnon issued the following statement today in response to an investigation by the Maine Wire related to noncitizen voting in Maine:
“A recent Maine Wire investigation revealed the possibility of non-citizens being registered to vote in Maine and casting ballots in previous elections. This finding hinges on the accuracy of state-managed MaineCare data. If this data is inaccurate, it presents a separate problem related to the integrity of Maine’s Medicaid program.
“Any vote that is cast by an individual who is not legally allowed to vote in an election, including the upcoming election on November 5, illegally influences our elections.
“Gov. Janet Mills, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and Attorney General Aaron Frey have a decision to make. They can take this vulnerability in our voting system seriously and take all legal steps possible to ensure that non-citizens are not voting in our elections, or they can ignore the problem, abandoning their Constitutional duty to Maine citizens. They need to act now, before the November 5 election, to ensure the integrity of our system.
“Furthermore, to ensure that this problem is dealt with permanently, we urge Gov. Mills to launch an immediate investigation to learn how, why and who registered these individuals to vote, and develop a legislative response to guarantee it never happens again in the future.”
