Lawmakers on Maine’s Taxation and Appropriation and Financial Affairs Committees are actively negotiating the state’s supplemental budget. Governor Mills’ tax conformity proposal excludes 251 Maine businesses that employ 40,000 workers, forcing these business to pay an estimated $20 million in state taxes on federally forgiven Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. Full tax conformity is an investment in Maine’s future and our economic recovery. No Maine employer should be penalized for accepting PPP assistance and using those funds to keep their business afloat amid the governor’s stay-at-home order and economic restrictions.
