Maine Policy Institute Statement in Response to
Governor Mills’ Extension of the Business Curfew Order

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Policy Institute CEO Matthew Gagnon issued the following statement Friday in response to Governor Janet Mills’ decision to extend her business curfew order through Sunday, January, 3, 2021:

“The governor’s business curfew order has no basis whatsoever in science, yet today she announced the order is being extended through January 3, 2021. Coronaviruses aren’t more deadly after dark. Closing businesses at an arbitrary time does nothing to stop people from gathering indoors, and it certainly hasn’t proven to help contain the virus since the rule went into effect.

Governor Mills has totally abandoned science. Her arbitrary, one-size-fits-all approach to this virus continues to destroy Maine’s economy and the livelihoods we depend on to feed our families. It is time for the Maine Legislature to reassert itself as a co-equal branch of government and give the people of Maine a voice in our state’s response to the virus. Maine people can no longer afford single person rule in Augusta.”
