In the most recent episode of the Pine Tree Pulse podcast, Maine Policy CEO Matt Gagnon sits own with Congressman Jared Golden, who has represented Maine’s 2nd Congressional District since 2019. Golden is fresh off a closely contested reelection fight against Austin Theriault, which he won as a Democrat despite Donald Trump winning his district by 9 percentage points.
Matt and Jared talk about how he was able to do that, and what lessons can be drawn from his win, particularly for the increasingly progressive Democratic Party. Navigating the political realignment in both parties and finding his role is a big part of the conversation.
They also talk about the work ahead in the new Congress with the incoming Trump administration and Republican majorities in both chambers. Recent votes on the Laken Riley Act, as well as the Protection of Womena nd Girls in Sports Act are discussed, as is Golden’s proposal fro a 10 percent across the board tariff.
Finally, Matt and Jared talk about Golden’s political future, and the speculation that he may run for governor of Maine (or another office) in 2026. He explains his thinking, and what will go into his decision about what he does next.
It is a wide ranging interview, and we appreciate the congressman being willing to sit down with us and talk candidly. Listen to the full episode below.
