Maine Policy Institute Releases Statement Supporting
SCOTUS Decision in Carson v. Makin

PORTLAND, Maine – Maine Policy Institute CEO Matthew Gagnon issued this statement today following the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Carson v. Makin, a Maine-based school choice and religious freedom case:

“We applaud the high court’s decision today striking down Maine’s sectarian exclusion. As the court reaffirmed today, it is not an Establishment Clause violation to allow children to receive subsidy to attend religious schools through the genuine exercise of choice on behalf of families. As the court previously ruled, if a state decides to subsidize private education through a school choice program, it cannot exclude some schools from participation solely because they are religious. This could not be more clear than it is now after today’s ruling. Maine’s sectarian exclusion has long violated the Free Exercise clause of the First Amendment, and our nation’s high court rightfully struck it down today.

“Maine Policy will continue to pursue school choice policies that expand education opportunities for Maine students and families. Every student deserves an individualized education that best meets their needs. As a result of today’s decision, Maine families will enjoy greater access to an education that helps their children reach their full potential.”

Maine Policy and EdChoice submitted a brief in support of the petitioners in this case in September 2021.
